Its name is derived from the fact that when Thanet was separated from mainland Kent, it was possible to wade across the channel there.
At the centre of the village is a thirteenth century parish church of St Nicholas with the parish now covering the nearby villages of Shuart and Sarre. Situated in an agricultural area, the predominant crop is potato. This study commenced with the census and parish records and then advanced to include other documents held locally in Canterbury and centrally at Kew.
